Artist's Description

Giant Waterlily (Nymphaea gigantea). Native to Australia and as you can see much utilised by the local birds and animals, this lily is found anywhere where there's water such as rivers and floodplains. The blooms only last one single day, then gradually make their way under the water, where the seed receptacle forms and emits it's seeds and so the cycle goes on. They live quite happily with the local Water Snowflake which you can see in the background.

The plant was an important food source for Aborigines, who ate the fresh flowers as well as the seeds. The importance of the plant is evident as the Aboriginal names Arnurna, Yakp-Kalo, Kaooroo, Moi-U, Thindah, Thoolambool, Mille, Thoongoon, Urgullathy and Irrpo all demonstrate. Many of these names referred specifically to parts of the plant.

I found these one's at the Tyto Wetlands in Ingham.
