Lotus Lily (Nelumbo nuficera)
More commonly known as an Indian or Asian flower , these Lotus lillies are also native to Australia. Indigenous Australians have eaten the new shoots, raw immature nuts, cooked nuts and the roasted rhizome for millenium.
They are a stunning plant, these one’s grow in a pond at Anderson Park, Townsville and never fail to blow me away.
The resident Magpie Geese stamp down the leaves and float about the pond on them, and occasionally nest in amongst them.
